The team at Tomorrow's Air is always busy tracking the latest trends and developments from the dynamic sectors of carbon dioxide removal and sustainable aviation fuel. Through our technical supply partners and through the conferences, panel discussions, newsletters and research reports we monitor, Tomorrow's Air keeps abreast of what's happening and offers a monthly digest in our Airrow Bulletin.
- What the U.S. Election Results Mean for Climate. The results of the U.S. election have climate technology and policy experts speculating on what comes next. If you’re wondering whether climate action is headed downhill, I encourage listening to this post from Susan Su.
- Carbon Removal from the Corporate Perspective. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development released a new report, which is a call to action for businesses to engage in carbon removal. Sixteen organizations from various sectors (including energy, shipping, and retail) share their latest thinking around carbon removal and the journey to net zero.
- Article 6 Agreement at the COP is the Big News (or not) for Voluntary Carbon Markets. The adoption of Article 6 at the COP last month has some carbon market analysts cheering a “historic milestone” that will boost national ambitions for emissions reduction and mobilize urgent climate finance. What is Article 6? It’s a section in the Paris Agreement focused on helping countries work together to reduce their carbon emissions. It sets out two options for countries to trade offsets, helping them meet the greenhouse gas reduction goals set in their climate action plans. The agreement was tough to reach, with negotiations dragging on for years. Now, it’s seen as an important mechanism for delivering climate finance to developing countries. A Paris Agreement carbon market, if launched, could continue operating even if the incoming Trump administration withdraws U.S. support for the Paris Agreement. For an in-depth look at how this may affect the voluntary carbon market we all participate in, you might want to look at this conversation sparked by Adrian Wons on LinkedIn.
- Carbon Dioxide Removal Investment Act. Signs of legislative support for the carbon removal technologies Tomorrow’s Air supports always make me grin, so this next bit was a nice piece of news: Late in November, Senators from Colorado and Alaska introduced a new bill: the Carbon Dioxide Removal Investment Act. Currently, the only federal policy supporting carbon removal provides tax credits for CO2 captured through direct air capture (DAC) and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). New policies are needed to encourage continued deployment of the range of carbon removal approaches in development (such as enhanced rock weathering, marine carbon dioxide removal, and other approaches that use biomass), and this new legislation would help close this gap. The Act has the support of the National Wildlife Federation and many others.
