Martin shares in the conversation about how Octavia's direct air capture (DAC) technology in Kenya works, and why Kenya is ideally suited for DAC due to its abundant renewable energy, suitable geology, and talented workforce. The company has developed patented filter technology that captures CO2 from the air and uses geothermal heat for processing.
Martin shares why the funding received from from Tomorrow's Air is so helpful, in demonstrating future demand for their technology. He reported significant cost reductions, with their second machine costing 5% less than the first. Octavia also recently received an 'Ae' carbon credit rating from BeZero Carbon, and a stellar AAA standalone carbon rating. This marks a major milestone for Octavia as this is BeZero's first public ex-ante rating for Direct Air Capture + Storage (DACS). The AAA rating will place Octavia in the top ~0.1% of all projects rated by BeZero, as the 2nd-ever to achieve their highest possible rating.
Martin also announced their status as an XPRIZE finalist, competing for prizes worth up to $50 million. The company has grown from 3 people in mid-2022 to about 60 people today, including 40 engineers, making them the world's fifth-largest DAC company and the first in the global south.
